Apps could be making the leap onto desktop computers this year. And you can thank Apple for that.

The iPhone maker said last month that it is opening its Mac App Store in the United States this Thursday for Mac computers and notebooks. Apps available include educational, game and productivity software.

While sceptics abound, some observers think that the Mac App Store could make paid digital distribution of software on computers more popular, especially for games.
