SINGAPORE - Telcos have reported no major reception issues with the iPhone 4 after slightly more than two weeks since the smartphone's launch here.

The much anticipated Apple smartphone received complaints earlier from US customers after the device displayed a marked drop in reception when the phone's antenna was obstructed by a user's hand. Some have reported that the device dropped calls when the signal reception was affected.

However, this problem seemed to be of little concern to Singapore users as there had been no reports of such issues with the smartphone here.

StarHub's corporate communications manager Cassie Fong said that the telco did not receive any reports of reception issues with the iPhone 4.

M1 also responded to a media query, saying that the reception problem is "not an issue as Apple has made available bumpers" to those who purchase the phone. Apple had earlier announced that it will offer a free rubber bumper that wraps around the steel sides of the iPhone 4, to counter the antenna issue.

DigitalOne's reviewers have also found the iPhone 4 to be working well. Although the phone did display a drop in signal bars when the its antenna was blocked by a user's hand, calls were not dropped and call quality was not affected. No slowing down in the transfer of data was observed as well.

AsiaOne editor Adrian Tay, 36, who had been using the iPhone 4 for the past 3 weeks, also did not encounter any major reception issues.

"I am not a fussy user. As long as I can hear the other party and my messages get through, then I have no complaints.

"There are certain times when I noticed that the reception was not strong. However, I had the same experience with my previous phones, so it might not have been an issue with the iPhone 4."
