The university is the first high education institute which has adopted the unprecedented move.
Seoul Women's University said on Friday it would distribute Apple's iPhone 4 to all the students and staff members for free in a bid to use the latest smartphone for mobile lectures, library seat reservation at library and other school-related purposes.
"In order to cope with changes in the education sector such as virtual campus, our university decided to provide better scholastic services through iPhone 4," said a spokesperson of the university. "We expect the satisfaction level in campus to improve with the free distribution of iPhone 4."
The university is the first high education institute which has adopted the unprecedented move amid heightened public interest about smartphone and its application in various fields.
The move came as Apple launched the long-awaited iPhone 4 for Korean users on Friday. The previous model iPhone 3 sold briskly since its debut in Korea in late December.
Seoul Women's University students and staff members will be allowed to receive iPhone 4 free of charge on the condition that they agree to maintain the subscription for 30 months with a monthly plan of 45,000 won or higher. The university plans to sign a deal with KT, an exclusive provider of iPhones in Korea, on technical support and maintenance services.
